301 stainless steel spring wire is an austenitic stainless steel capable of achieving high strengths and ductility through cold working. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment. In its annealed state, Type 301 is non-magnetic but becomes increasingly magnetic with cold working. It is often preferred over types 302 and 304 in the tempered condition because it offers higher elongation at a given strength level, facilitating easier fabrication.
