316/316L stainless steel sheet is a popular choice when exceptional corrosion resistance is paramount. Known for its durability in challenging environments, 316 stainless steel sheet metal is widely used in marine applications, highly acidic environments, and underwater equipment. The material’s resilience also makes it a top choice for surgical tools, food processing, and pharmaceutical applications.

One of the key elements that differentiates stainless steel 316 sheet from its counterparts, like the 304 grade, is the addition of molybdenum. This element significantly enhances the corrosion resistance of 316 stainless steel, making it more suitable for exposure to chloride and other corrosive substances.

Metals Depot offers a wide range of thicknesses for 316 stainless steel sheet, available for online purchase in custom sizes. For specific thicknesses, shapes, or custom polish directions, feel free to reach out for tailored orders. Note that the grain direction on polished sheets is random unless specified or custom quoted.

Characteristics of 316/316L Stainless Steel Sheet

The 316/316L stainless steel alloy is an austenitic stainless steel, which means it has superior strength and corrosion resistance. The grade 316 is the second most popular among stainless steels, second only to the 304 grade. However, due to the presence of molybdenum, 316 stainless steel sheet metal offers much better protection against corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments.

Grade 316L, a low-carbon variant of 316, provides additional benefits for welded components, as it prevents harmful precipitation in temperatures between 800º F and 1500º F. This makes 316L ideal for use in thicker, welded sections without compromising corrosion resistance. Interestingly, there is typically no price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel.

Key Characteristics:

  • Cold Working: Good
