Grade 430 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel with a range of properties that make it suitable for various applications, particularly those requiring good corrosion and heat resistance. Here's a summary of its key features:

Corrosion Resistance:

Grade 430: Offers good resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, including nitric acid and some organic acids.
Maximum resistance: Achieved when the material is highly polished or buffed.
Comparable to Grade 304: In terms of pitting and crevice corrosion, though slightly less resistant.
Stress Corrosion Cracking: Has high resistance, typical for ferritic stainless steels.
Grade 430F: The free machining version has reduced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance due to higher sulfur content.

Heat Resistance:

Oxidation Resistance: Withstands oxidation in intermittent service up to 870°C and in continuous service up to 815°C.
Brittleness: Prolonged exposure to 400-600°C can cause brittleness, which can be removed through annealing.

Heat Treatment:

Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, followed by slow furnace cooling and quick air cooling.
Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
Not Hardenable: This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

Welding:

Pre-heating: Required at 150-200°C before welding.
Post-Weld Anneal: Can relieve embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone by annealing at 790-815°C.

Machining:

Easier than Austenitic Grades: Grade 430 is easier to machine compared to Grade 304, though galling and pick-up on the cutting tool are possible.
Grade 430F: The free machining version is significantly easier to machine.

Fabrication:

Forming: The lower work hardening rate makes it easier to form and bend than Grade 304.
Ductility: Lower ductility limits the material’s ability to undergo severe forming operations.
Cold Heading: Grade 430 wire can undergo severe cold heading, especially if the bend axis is perpendicular to the rolling direction.

This balance of properties makes Grade 430 useful in environments requiring corrosion resistance, moderate heat resistance, and reasonable machinability.
