904L Stainless Steel Sheet Fabrication Data
The following information is derived from the 904l stainless steel data sheet, providing key insights into the fabrication properties of this alloy.
Alloy 904L demonstrates excellent weldability and can be processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
Cold Forming
904L exhibits high ductility, allowing for easy forming. However, due to its molybdenum and nitrogen content, more powerful processing equipment may be required compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
For hot working processes, the recommended temperature range is 1562 – 2102°F (850 –1150°C). While hot working typically requires subsequent solution annealing and quenching, 904L offers a unique advantage. If hot forming is halted at a temperature above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is immediately quenched, no further heat treatment is necessary. It's crucial to ensure the entire workpiece is quenched from temperatures exceeding 2012°F (1100°C). In cases of partial heating, cooling below 2012°F (1100°C), or if cooling occurs too slowly, hot working must be followed by solution annealing and quenching. The recommended solution annealing temperature for 904L is 1940 – 2084°F (1060 –1140°C).
Machining
Due to its cold work hardening rate, Alloy 904L is less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
Alloy 904L is amenable to most standard welding processes. As an austenitic plate material, it possesses a homogeneous austenitic structure with evenly distributed alloying elements. Post-welding solidification can lead to the redistribution of elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel. These segregations, present in the weld's cast structure, may potentially impact corrosion resistance in certain environments. However, 904L exhibits less pronounced segregation compared to other materials. It can be welded using filler metal of the same composition or even without filler metal.
The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrode and 20 25 CuL wire.
